3 Keys to Choosing a Forklift Scale

Choosing the right scale

Forklift scale

Selecting the right forklift scale for your operation can be a bit of a chore. Forklift scales can be used in warehouses, logistics firms, and shipping and receiving environments to name a few. Below are three keys to consider when buying a forklift scale.

SCALE CAPACITY AND SIZE

A forklift scale is unique in the sense that it is weighing the load as it's moving it to its next location. This is a great way to save time between loads, but it also offers a unique challenge in knowing the best capacity and size you will need to ensure your forklift scale is performing optimally.

Scale manufacturers understand that each environment is unique and will have varying demands. When selecting a forklift scale, you will want to figure out what capacity options are offered. The first thing you should consider is the maximum weight value you will be putting on the scale. By knowing your capacity, you will then be able to determine how you would like to read the weight.

Forklift scales that are NTEP certified can handle loads upwards of 5,000lbs. Depending on what is being weighed and at the frequency will help you pick a scale with the right capacity rating. Performing scale calibrations would help you figure out the capacity of your scale If your load cells are under capacity of what you typically weigh, then you could affect the lifespan of your scale.

Displays

When weighing an item you need a means of actually displaying the weight so you know if you are over or under capacity. The display for a forklift scale will differ in design between a weight indicator. Since the forklift scale is physically attached to the forklift (which is usually in motion), you will want a display that is versatile and can handle taking in motion measurements.

Most displays for forklift scales will have various features including wifi and bluetooth for wireless functionality. There are also displays that have a power supply to use on electric or gas powered forklifts.

Choosing a display will ultimately come down to the features offered and if they mesh well with your operation. It is recommended to look for displays that offer portability as well as wireless functionality. Custom mounting positions are also an option if you have a specific place you would like to place the display.

Software Integration

Adding software to your operation is a great way to get some of the functionality of a weight indicator or display. Like any piece of software there are differences. Some software will only work with specific scales and may lack functionality options like printer support. It is a good idea to check the specifications on the software that you are considering, because you could run the risk of buying software that is not compatible.

A good software package will have features that will help enhance productivity in your operation. Ease of use, workflow and program stability are all things to look for when choosing software. Below are a few features to search for when selecting software.

  • Printer configuration

  • Weight Display information

  • Menus for calibration, configuration and diagnostics

  • Virtual panel (essentially a virtual indicator)

  • Windows and Ios functionality
